John Taylor Gatto
Writing on the Web
A former New York teacher of the year, Gatto is the most interesting writer on education today. He shows that our bureaucratic schools and our bureaucratic society get in the way of learning, and he often contrasts modern America with 19th century America, where family, work, and democratic self-government let people educate themselves.
Gatto has the following works on the web:
- johntaylorgatto.com: Gatto's web site includes information about his book, The Underground History of American Education, and about other projects he is working on.
- Why Schools Don’t Educate: The speech Gatto gave when he accepted the New York City Teacher of the Year Award in 1990. Gatto argues that the crisis of our schools is just one part of the larger crisis of our society.
